museums in london KTLA Channel 5 [Los Angeles, CA] - Big Blue Marble (Partial Episode, 1980)

Here's a (mostly complete) episode of the educational children's series Big Blue Marble, the videotaping of which was joined "already in progress," as aired over KTLA Channel 5 in Los Angeles. (Thanks to Joe D'Angelo for the tape.)

This show ran from 1974 to 1983. It was funded by ITT, and over the course of its run won multiple Emmys, as well as a Peabody in 1975. Differing segments spotlighted young people in various occupations around the world (the title is in reference to the Earth as seen from a faraway distance, derived from the title of a photograph thereof taken during the Apollo 17 moon landing in 1972).

This is listed in an episode guide as Program #28.

As the tape comes in (another show apparently was recorded over this), we are midway through a look at the Sailor Circus in Sarasota, FL, mostly run by kids. Portions of a performance are shown, and three of the youngsters - veteran aerialists with the circus - are spotlighted to speak about their mood as they're about to perform their act - which goes off without a hitch.

This is followed by an animated "N-E-W-S" segment with "Bluey" the singing globe, doing solicitation for global "Pen Pals"; the "Dear Pen Pal" address is given at the end. ("Bluey" is voiced by executive producer Robert Wiemer).

Next is a "Where in the World" segment, starting with a capsuled look at England, and leading to an "Occupations: Senior Ordinary Seaman" look at 17-year-old Tony Hayes, serving in that capacity on board the QE2 as it weaves its way through the Atlantic Ocean. At the time of this episode, he had been at sea two years. He is seen performing various duties on board the ship (one of his supervisors is a Mr. Taylor), and a look at an infrequent visit to his home in Clanfield, England. On this journey, the QE2 is on its way to New York (which he had been to 30 times up to that point).

Afterwards is a "Next Time" segment (voiceover by ??) previewing upcoming Program #29, including a look at a young Kevin Clash (years before becoming "Elmo" on Sesame Street) in Baltimore, MD, and a piece (voiceover by ??) about two young horsemen in the then-Soviet Union playing an ancient equestrian sport, "Tchen-Burti," which is similar to polo and using sticks similar to what is used in lacrosse.
