The Betsie Beers is a Country Band from Cape Town started as a duo by sisters, Landi (acoustic guitar and harmonica) and Zel Degenaar (electric guitar and kick drum) back in 2011. Arriving in Cape Town, they lived in a one-bedroom apartment in Long Street and would play open mic nights around town. Their first gig as The Betsie Beers was at Zula Bar in 2011. They started jamming with other musicians and bands at a small music venue called Down South and played at a violence against woman fundraiser at The Harley Davidson Club in 2013. Many gigs followed with bands like Crimson House Blues, Wolftown, Oh Mercy, Nick Turner, Laurie Levine, Akkedis, amongst others. Then they met Gerhardt Claassen. Gerhardt started playing guitar at age 10. Combining an early love for country and delta blues with folk and rock he brings versatility to the band and currently plays in a variety of projects across different genres (SNAFU, DADA-FM, VoortVlugtend, G-Man & the Gingers and The Betsie Beers. Major festivals include Greenpop, Rocking the daisies and Ted Talks in 2017. In 2018 they found Wouter Reyneke who has been playing bass professionally for many years and has performed with some of the best South African bands and artists in the industry. While having obtained his B.Tech. Mus degree at the Tshwane University of Technology in jazz studies, he is a versatile player and can adapt to any musical situation, equally at home on stage and in studio. The Betsie Beers recorded their first album in 2016 called Heartbreak Road in Johannesburg with Producer Barry Berk, and Laurie Levine as a guest artist on one of the tracks
