Take a look round this wonderful and historic trimaran, which has just finished the #RolexFastnetRace in the hands of French owner and skipper Charlie Capelle.
Now named Acapella, this 38ft Walter Green design from the 1970s was once Canadian sailing legend Mike Birch's Olympus Photo. Birch raced her in the very first Route du Rhum solo transatlantic race in 1978 and, to the astonishment of the French press, beat Michel Malinovsky's maxi Kriter V, a monohull almost twice its size. The little trimaran overhauled the big monohull just 500m from the finish line to win by 98 seconds after almost 3,500 miles of racing.
Capelle, a well-known boatbuilder, has Acapella in fantastic condition and tweaked for racing. She now sports carbon rig and carbon floats and is beautiful inside, as you can see in this little video.
Her crew said she was 'drysuit wet' in the Fastnet Race, upwind and downwind, and agreed that, yes, she really is a Yellow Submarine!
